Biography of Dmitry Kryuchkov

Born into a lower middle class family in St. Petersburg in 1887. Graduated from the German high school [Annenschule], studied at an institute but did not graduate. He was a poet. Prior to 1921 he was a psalm reader [psalomshchik] at the Orthodox Church of St. Panteleimon. In the autumn of 1922 he became acquainted with Fr. Leonid Feodorov, Exarch of Russian [Eastern Rite] Catholics. On August 19, 1923, he converted to Catholicism and joined the community of Russian Catholics at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Petrograd. He worked as a literary translator at the state publishing house “Vsemirnaya Literatura” and at the private publishing house “Academia.” On the initiative of Fr. Feodorov, he organized a circle of “theophiles,” which often met in his apartment and read commentaries of St. John Chrysostom and theological books. December 7, 1923 – arrested in a case against Russian Catholics. December 19, 1923 – sent to Moscow for further investigation and held in Butyrka Prison. May 19, 1924 – sentenced under Article 61 of the Criminal Code of the RSFSR to ten years in prison. Sent to the Irkutsk Political Isolator – and then in June 1926 transferred to the Aleksandrov Political Isolator; later transferred to Osinov sector of Siblag where he worked in the mines of Aralichev and Osinovka; from 1928 he was an associate [sotrudnik] of the management of Kuznetsstroy. December 22, 1932 – granted an early release from camp with restrictions against living in the twelve major cities and the Ural oblast and assignment to a regular place of residence [OGPU Collegium]. As of January 1933 he was living in Yaroslavl, where he was again arrested, in 1936, and sentenced to fifteen years in corrective labor camp. Fate thereafter unknown.
